Nigerian-born East Londoner gets all soulful and sad over modern sonics on his debut album Our Father. His dark sonics and intimate vocal style has already been used on well-received hits and collaborations with Massive Attack and Gorillaz. Our Father makes much-needed statements on race on Britain, masculinity and mental health and transforming the black musician stereotype.

about

Azekel made his mark towards the middle of 2014 with the release of the track "New Romance" which was written and produced by him out of his apartment in London, England. The track went on to be tweeted by Azekel’s childhood hero Prince through his 3RDEYEGIRL Twitter account during the autumn of 2014. New Romance was taken from the first of Azekel’s 2-part collections “Raw, Vol. 1 which was released in July 2015 and was then followed up with the second in the series "Raw, Vol. 2"

At the Beginning of 2016 Azekel revealed his collaboration with Massive Attack, co-writing and featuring on the title track of their recent EP "Ritual Spirit" – the video of which featured legendary supermodel Kate Moss. Azekel also performed with the band during their tour of the UK and Europe; a highlight of which was performing in London’s Hyde Park to over 40,000 people with the band.

Azekel started 2017 by touring with Banks supporting her on her UK and European tour dates. He followed this performance by stepping on stage with Gorillaz to perform on the track Momentz (feat. De La Soul) which features his vocals. Azekel also features on another Gorillaz track called “Midnite Float” which was released on their delux Vinyl package.

Azekel releases his album in a series of chapters, incrementally building on its narrative progression. Starting with Chapter One – Family, then followed by Chapter Two – Mental Health, and Chapter Three – Youth. Azekel specifically chose these three themes as he was faced with all three themes throughout the process of the album. The album itself is a compelling account of his life as a young family man navigating his twenties, parenthood, and his mental health in today’s society. “Our Father” challenges the stereotypical narrative of absentee fatherhood in the black community. Through his music, we hear Azekel grappling with the harsh responsibility of transitioning into this role, and stepping up to the plate of nurturing his children. It is the anthem for every present father who desires to help raise the next generation, and give more than what they themselves received.
